Inside Kansas Festivals: The Lovegrass Music Festival 2026 Experience

In this episode of Music Festivals Podcast, I chat with longtime Lovegrass Music Festival attendee Maggie Menhusen about what has kept her and her family coming back to Wilson State Park year after year. We talk about everything from campground picking and shared meals to lakeside camping, the welcoming festival community, and why Lovegrass has become one of Kansas' favorite grassroots bluegrass gatherings.

As our conversation unfolded, one thing became clear: while the lineup brings people to Wilson Lake, it's the sense of community that keeps them coming back.

More Than a Weekend Away

Every festival has its own personality.

Some are built around massive crowds and nonstop schedules. Lovegrass takes a different approach. Set inside Wilson State Park, it's a place where the music, the campground, and the lake all feel connected, creating a relaxed atmosphere that's just as enjoyable between sets as it is in front of the stage.

Maggie described it as the kind of festival where it's easy to slow down. You can spend the afternoon listening to music, cool off by the water, wander through the campground, and still find yourself back in time for your favorite band.

It's easy to understand why families make a vacation out of it, spending as much time enjoying the park as they do the performances.

There's no pressure to rush from one thing to the next. The weekend unfolds at its own pace.

Where Strangers Become Neighbors

One of my favorite parts of our conversation centered on the campground.

Maggie explained that before long, the people camping around you stop feeling like strangers.

Conversations begin while setting up camp, continue over coffee the next morning, and often end with an invitation to share a meal or pull up a chair for an evening of picking.

Her group even plans breakfasts and dinners together throughout the weekend, bringing campers from different loops around the park together before heading back to the music.

It's a simple tradition, but it's also a reminder that festivals aren't just built by promoters or performers. They're built by the people who return each year and make everyone around them feel welcome. That's the kind of hospitality you can't put on a schedule.

A Festival That Grows One Neighbor at a Time

Maggie also shared why she believes the festival has continued to grow.

Certainly, the lineup helps, and she spoke highly of the festival's VIP experience for those looking to get even closer to the music. But more than anything, she pointed to the people.

When newcomers are greeted with a smile, invited into a campground conversation, or encouraged to join a jam session, they're far more likely to come back the following year.

That's how grassroots festivals grow—not overnight, but one friendship at a time.

This August, Music Festivals Podcast will be making its first trip to Lovegrass Music Festival, bringing live performances, 
interviews, and coverage from Wilson State Park throughout the weekend.

I've learned after visiting festivals across the country that the best events aren't defined only by the artists on the poster. They're defined by the people who gather around them and the traditions they create together.

Lovegrass sounds like exactly that kind of place.

And I have a feeling we'll leave Wilson Lake with more friends than we arrived with.
