Sometimes it's a hit song. Sometimes it's a sold-out show. And sometimes it's winning one of the most respected band competitions in bluegrass music. For [Rachel Sumner](https://rachelsumnermusic.com/), that moment came in 2025 when she and her band won the [Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest](https://bluegrass.com/telluride/lineup/telluride-band-contest), earning an invitation to return the following year for their first performance on Telluride's legendary Main Stage. It's the kind of opportunity musicians dream about. But after talking with Rachel on [Music Festivals Podcast](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/), it became clear that the award was only part of the story. What fascinated me most was how she chose to build on that momentum while staying true to the music that inspires her.     ### [![SAVE 25% on Tickets Use Code: MFPSAVE Offer Expires July 31st, 2026 Experience the 54th Walnut Valley Festival & National Flatpicking Championships. Like so many musicians, she first came as a fan and a volunteer, soaking in the atmosphere, listening to legendary performers, and imagining what it might feel like to someday be part of the festival herself. ![Rachel Sumner Traveling Light Sessons](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Rachel%20Sumner%20Traveling%20Light%20Sessons.png?width=940&height=627&name=Rachel%20Sumner%20Traveling%20Light%20Sessons.png) That's one of the things I love about festivals. They have a way of bringing people back in new roles. Fans become volunteers. Volunteers become artists. And sometimes those artists return to inspire the next generation standing in the crowd. Rachel's journey feels like a perfect example of that cycle. ### Turning a Prize Into a Project ![Screen Shot 2026-07-20 at 11.29.38 AM](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screen%20Shot%202026-07-20%20at%2011.29.38%20AM.png?width=264&height=264&name=Screen%20Shot%202026-07-20%20at%2011.29.38%20AM.png)Winning the Telluride Band Contest came with more than a coveted Main Stage performance. It also included a day of recording at Colorado's renowned [eTown Studios](https://www.etown.org/etown-hall/), where Rachel and her band decided to do something unexpected. Instead of recording material from the full-length album they were already working on, they used that one day to create [**Yodelay**](https://open.spotify.com/album/5R82ZDhlasZ4qDK1lNpXtu), a collection of cowboy songs that could be captured in a single recording session. The EP was later mastered by Dave Glasser and released in time for their return to Telluride. Rather than treating the studio time as a bonus, they turned it into a creative opportunity that became a project all its own. ### Telling Stories That Deserve to Be Heard One of the things that stood out most during our conversation was Rachel's curiosity about history. Whether she's writing about labor movements, exploring traditional cowboy music, or uncovering stories that don't always make it into history books, her songwriting looks beyond familiar narratives and asks listeners to see America's musical heritage from a different perspective. ![media-webcasts-2024-240626afc1200-240626afc1200_background_00035200](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/hs-fs/hubfs/media-webcasts-2024-240626afc1200-240626afc1200_background_00035200.jpg?width=940&height=529&name=media-webcasts-2024-240626afc1200-240626afc1200_background_00035200.jpg) She even described her band's approach with a term they coined themselves: ["Famericana."](https://www.facebook.com/reel/840383298991870/) It's roots music shaped by women's stories, overlooked historical events, and fresh perspectives, while remaining deeply connected to the traditions that came before. That's a reminder that folk and bluegrass have always been living traditions. Every generation adds its own voice without losing sight of where the music began. ### Looking Ahead Rachel also shared a glimpse of what's next, including a performance with a full orchestra at an upcoming festival—an opportunity that came after an arranger selected her music as one of a handful of artists to receive original orchestral arrangements. It's another exciting chapter for an artist whose career continues to grow, but what struck me most is that the foundation hasn't changed. Whether she's playing an intimate acoustic set, recording a cowboy EP, or performing with an orchestra, the focus remains on thoughtful storytelling and honest songwriting. ### Why This Story Matters ![images (1)](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/hs-fs/hubfs/images%20(1).jpeg?width=434&height=288&name=images%20(1).jpeg)Festival victories often make headlines, but the real story begins after the applause fades. Rachel Sumner's journey reminds us that success isn't just about reaching the next stage—it's about deciding what to do once you get there. She used a prize to create something meaningful, embraced the traditions that shaped her as an artist, and continues to tell stories that connect the past with the present. That's the kind of journey worth celebrating. And if this conversation is any indication, I don't think we've heard the last of Rachel Sumner. We'll see you down the road, neighbors. ### Festival Performance of the Week: Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light Lennon-Award-winning songwriter Rachel Sumner sits at the helm of the string band Traveling Light.  This performance was a feature of The Homegrown Music Concert Series.      Video Credit: [Library of Congress](https://www.youtube.com/@loc)— *Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light: Traditional Folk and Bluegrass*   - [Tweet](https://twitter.com/share) [![Coffee, Community, and Carrying the Flame with Drury Anderson](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/hubfs/Screen%20Shot%202026-02-06%20at%202.00.51%20PM.png)](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/blog/coffee-community-and-carrying-the-flame-with-drury-anderson) #### [Coffee, Community, and Carrying the Flame with Drury Anderson](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/blog/coffee-community-and-carrying-the-flame-with-drury-anderson) ![Picture of Neighbor N8](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Neighbor%20N8%20-%20MFP%20Headshot.png?width=30&name=Neighbor%20N8%20-%20MFP%20Headshot.png) [Neighbor N8](https://musicfestivalspodcast.com/blog/author/neighbor-n8) : Feb 10, 2026 10:57:18 AM In Episode 67 of the Music Festivals Podcast, I share a conversation with Drury Anderson of Mountain Grass Unit to talk about music, community and...
