In episode 44 of the Music Festivals Podcast, I take you inside the heart of the 12th annual Dark Star Jubilee, held annually at the iconic Legend Valley concert venue in Thornville, Ohio, over Memorial Day weekend.
This special documentary-style recap isn’t just a rundown of set lists—it’s about the people, stories, and unmistakable “vibe” that make Dark Star Jubilee a standout in the jam band and festival scene.
This episode brings together voices from across the festival spectrum, featuring artists, longtime attendees, passionate vendors, and nonprofit organizers. Whether veterans who saw the Grateful Dead in the ‘70s or younger fans catching their first festival, everyone shares what draws them back year after year.
As repeat attendee Perry put it,
“You know, last year we were coming and I was very apprehensive… but we did spring for the VIP and sitting in the tent, it’s nice and comfy and it’s a mellow scene and the music is good, the sound is good. The vendors are good, the food is good. It’s great.”
We go far beyond music—as vendors and artists talk about following their passions and building full-time lives on the road. Kim, one of the many artists vending at Dark Star Jubilee, left a career in healthcare to become a full-time craft vendor on the jam band festival circuit talks about her challenges with what she coins as "vibe-shift":
“Healthcare is a noble cause, but it was not for me. I didn’t have the fortitude to... (But) when you do something you love so much, it doesn’t feel like a job. And then in return, that makes you happier and healthier.”
The stories shared by attendees and vendors in this episode reveal how the festival community empowers people to connect, support each other, and find their happiest selves.
We also spend time with Claudia, a self-proclaimed “old guard” Deadhead, who reminisces about the welcoming, multi-generational festival community:
“This is such a family atmosphere. There’s like three generations coming and everybody’s giving out bracelets… That kind of atmosphere reminds you what the scene is, should be, is all about.”
Of course, the episode spotlights this year’s lineup—Melvin Seals & JGB, Warren Haynes, Big Blitz, moe., and two full sets each night from Dark Star Orchestra, the festivals namesake host. There’s a focus on the inclusive “vibe” that keeps the scene’s spirit thriving, explored from multiple viewpoints.
If you love stories of transformation, community, and good music—or if you want to see what makes Dark Star Jubilee and festivals like it so magnetic—you won’t want to miss this episode.

This week's festival performance of the week is one of my favorite GD songs. Towards the end of the first set on Friday night, Dark Star Orchestra preformed "Deal". What's amazing to me is that when you watch the video, you can see that the band was experiencing some on-stage technical issues. And yet, they just kept right on rolling. I am always amazed at what professionals musicians can do on the spot, even under less than ideal circumstances.
“Deal” is a Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter classic that first hit ears at the Capitol Theatre in 1971 before landing on Garcia’s solo debut the following year. Rooted in American folk tradition, the song spins a tale of risk and reward—Hunter’s lyrics leaning on gambling metaphors to reflect life’s unpredictable turns, with the familiar warning: “Don’t you let that deal go down.” It became a staple for both the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band, and true to form, Dark Star Orchestra has kept it alive in countless set lists over the years, including the performance you'll watch below.
